Why Tesla Wheels Fail the Way They Do
Tesla curb rash is its own category. The Model 3 and Model Y ship on 18- and 19-inch wheels hidden behind plastic aero covers — Aero and Gemini — that sit over a plain alloy wheel underneath, so most owners don't discover the curb damage until the cover comes off. The 20-inch Induction and 21-inch Überturbine wheels on Performance cars have no cover, sit close to the curb, and are finished in a gloss black or dark grey that shows every scrape. Tesla service doesn't refinish wheels, so the damage just sits there.
Weight is the other issue. A Model Y weighs a quarter-ton more than the crossover it replaced, a Model X even more, and that mass goes straight into the wheel on a pothole hit — bent lips and slow leaks on Teslas are routine on I-95, I-75, and University Drive. The Model S Arachnid and Model X Turbine wheels are 21 and 22 inches with very little sidewall to absorb anything.
